Can higher parking fines reduce congestion?

EuroTraffic December 23, 2024
parking fines

Increasing the price of parking fines for violations represents a new strategy in the fight against congestion in urban areas. Cities are increasingly resorting to various measures to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow. High and well-enforced fines for illegal parking and stopping can discourage drivers from driving into the city center.

Toronto is one example where fines have been increased for more than 100 different parking violations. Parking and stopping fines were introduced to reduce congestion. The city has raised fines for a total of 123 violations, which, in addition to congestion, should also have a positive effect on safety. This measure is especially important in situations where illegal parking can block bike paths, bus stops or pedestrian crossings.

The City of Toronto said in a statement that increasing the fines could significantly contribute to reducing traffic congestion. It will encourage drivers to consider other modes of transportation, such as walking, cycling or public transportation. The decision comes as the city faces an increasing number of incidents involving cyclists and pedestrians.

In addition to reducing congestion, these measures can also contribute to greater road safety. Toronto has responded to calls from cycling activists for urgent action following the tragic death of a 24-year-old cyclist who was killed in a collision with a truck. Increasing fines for illegal parking near bike paths and in high-traffic areas can help reduce such accidents and improve the overall safety of all road users.

By increasing fines for violations, the budget for traffic safety should also increase. It remains to be seen whether the city will actually use those funds for that purpose.
