Climate tickets represent a new solution in the field of public transport. They aim to encourage the use of public transport instead of private cars. These tickets are valid throughout the country and cover all types of public transport. The very name of climate maps comes from the primary motivation, which is to reduce pollution.
Objectives and Advantages of Climate Maps
One of the main goals of climate maps is to reduce the use of private cars, which contributes to the reduction of harmful gas emissions and the improvement of air quality. These subsidized tickets, which are significantly lower than the regular ones, make public transport a more attractive option for a wide range of passengers. According to the definition of the Greenpeace organization, climate maps cover all types of public transport in the country in a certain period of time, thus ensuring integrated and efficient travel.
Implementation in European countries
In 2023, Slovenia, Hungary and Portugal introduced climate tickets, while France implemented similar tickets valid only for trains, excluding high-speed trains. Austria went a step further, allowing all citizens who turn 18 years of age to use the climate card for free for a whole year. These measures were adopted as part of the promotion of public transport as a viable alternative to private vehicles.
Do they really make sense?
Although climate maps offer significant advantages, their effectiveness is still a matter of debate. For example, Tallinn, which introduced free public transport in 2013, recorded a passenger growth of only 1.2%. This data indicates that the subsidization of ticket prices is not the only factor that affects the increase in the use of public transport. Transport infrastructure and accessibility remain key challenges that must be addressed in order to achieve greater efficiency.
Climate maps are an interesting concept. They are a step towards what should be the utopia of multimodal transport. However, to achieve maximum efficiency, it is necessary to simultaneously invest in improving the infrastructure and accessibility of public transport. Only through a combination of affordable tickets and the improvement of transportation systems is it possible to achieve a significant shift towards sustainable mobility and a better quality of life without a private car.
