Tolls in Europe and how to navigate

Road tolls in Europe are unfortunately not unified. When you venture on a long journey there are numerous things you need to think about. One of them is the different tolls in different countries. In order to help at least with those, we tried to gather as many information on tolls in Europe as possible, all in one place.

Tolls in the Balkans

  1. Serbia:
    System type: Closed system with ramps.
    Payment method: Electronic toll collection system (E-TAG), prepaid cards and cash.
    Payment locations: Toll booths. Gas stations and other points of sale if you buy or top up a TAG device.
    Penalty for non-payment: Varies; fines are usually imposed on the spot.
  2. Bosnia and Herzegovina:
    System type: Closed system with ramps.
    Payment method: Electronic toll collection system (E-TAG), prepaid cards and cash.
    Payment locations: Toll booths. Gas stations and other points of sale if you buy or top up a TAG device.
    Penalty for non-payment: Varies; fines are usually imposed on the spot.
  3. Croatia:
    System type: Closed system with ramps.
    Payment methods: toll booths, prepaid toll cards and electronic toll collection (ENC).
    Payment locations: toll booths, gas stations and online.
    Penalty for non-payment: Fines and on-the-spot fines for using toll roads without paying.

  1. Montenegro:
    System type: Closed system with ramps.

  2. North Macedonia:

    Penalty for non-payment: Varies; fines are usually imposed on the spot.
  3. Bulgaria:
    System type: Vignettes.
    Payment method: Vignette system for most vehicles.

    Payment locations: toll booths, online and gas stations.
    Penalty for non-payment: On-the-spot fines; significant penalties for non-compliance.
