Cities Across Europe Join the Initiative
European Mobility Week runs from 16 to 22 September 2025 under the slogan “Mobility for All.” More than 2,500 cities and municipalities across the continent are joining in. They are organizing events, workshops, and campaigns promoting sustainable, inclusive, and accessible urban transport.
Activities range from walking and cycling promotions to school safety education. Streets are temporarily closed to traffic and turned into spaces for art, culture, and community life. The European Commission underlines that mobility should not be a privilege but a right — ensuring everyone can reach school, work, healthcare, and essential services safely and sustainably.
Local Highlights and Creative Actions
In Nicosia, residents enjoyed free cycling tours, parades, and car-free streets repurposed for walking and social gatherings.
In Eskişehir, Turkey, the week opened with a colorful march through the city center. Events included bicycle rides, accessible tours for people with disabilities, family-friendly routes, and the annual “Car-Free Day,” when major roads are closed to vehicles and turned into open spaces for public activities.
Goals, Challenges, and the Way Forward
The European Commission emphasizes that the campaign aims not only to inspire citizens but also to push local authorities toward concrete measures. These include better pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, more accessible public transport, reduced air pollution, and greater inclusion of people with disabilities.
One of the ongoing challenges is ensuring all communities — including those with limited mobility and vulnerable groups — are fully involved. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to raise awareness about the importance of accessible and sustainable mobility in everyday life.
