With the FIFA World Cup 2026 now officially underway, millions of fans from around the globe are descending on stadiums, fan zones, and transit hubs across the United States and Canada. The result? An unprecedented test of urban mobility that is forcing host cities to rethink how they move people at scale — and do it fast.
A Tournament Like No Other
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first-ever 48-nation tournament, featuring 104 matches across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Sixteen cities — 12 in the U.S., two in Canada, and two in Mexico — are experiencing the excitement of the world stage as they host international matches over the next several weeks. The sheer scale of the event means traffic and transit systems are under extraordinary strain from day one.
The Federal Backstop: $100 Million in Transit Funding
Recognizing the scale of the challenge, Washington stepped in ahead of kickoff. The U.S. Department of Transportation invested $100.3 million to enhance public transportation services in host cities, with funding awarded through the Federal Transit Administration to assist local transit agencies with planning, capital improvements, and operating expenses. Cities can use the grants for everything from buying additional buses to providing transportation assistance for disabled visitors and express shuttle service to fans.
New Jersey: No Cars, No Parking — No Problem?
Perhaps the most high-stakes mobility challenge belongs to the New York/New Jersey region, which will host the World Cup Final on July 19. Eight matches will be held at MetLife Stadium in June and July, with hosts hoping the event will generate $3.3 billion in economic activity in the region.
There will be no parking at MetLife Stadium, which is renamed New York New Jersey Stadium for the tournament. Walking to MetLife Stadium is also banned — pedestrian traffic is prohibited on surrounding roadways. Instead, the region has built a comprehensive coordinated plan. The Host Committee and NJ Transit announced the Regional Mobility Plan in coordination with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the MTA, NJDOT, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, and Amtrak.
The transportation plan is designed to move more than 78,000 spectators per match using a coordinated network of stadium shuttle buses, rail service, rideshare, and permitted vehicles. A train carrying 1,200 people will leave Penn Station New York to Secaucus on match days every five minutes, returning to New York City every seven minutes. Officials have been candid about dependencies: “Without Amtrak, we will not be able to execute a proper plan for FIFA,” said NJ Transit President & CEO Kris Kolluri.
Kansas City: Building Transit From Scratch
If New Jersey’s challenge is managing an enormous existing system, Kansas City’s is even more fundamental. As the smallest U.S. host city for the World Cup, Kansas City faces questions about how it will shuttle 650,000 expected visitors around town — a figure that exceeds the city’s own estimated population of 520,000.
The city is building a new transit system specifically for the World Cup. FIFA requires, but doesn’t help pay for, host cities to provide public transportation to visitors — and in a sprawling city like Kansas City, that is an even bigger challenge because the existing transportation system already struggles to provide frequent and reliable service to its residents.
The centerpiece of the plan is the ConnectKC26 dedicated bus network. ConnectKC26 expanded its Stadium Direct service to handle crowds for World Cup matches at Arrowhead Stadium, with a new route running on match days only — June 16, 20, 25, and 27, and July 3 and 11 — taking fans from The Plaza to Arrowhead and back. The Stadium Direct buses run from three hours before the match until two hours after it ends, with the city closing 27th Street at the bus mall to allow buses to pass through more easily and avoid traffic congestion.
However, the long-term picture raises questions. Once the tournament ends, so will the new transit system, leaving residents back where they were before. Routes such as I-435, I-70, and I-35 are expected to see heightened traffic volumes, with congestion potentially beginning three hours before kickoff and stretching for hours afterward.
The Car-Dependent City Problem
Kansas City is not alone in facing structural transit limitations. Cities with deep transit systems can absorb the load, but car-dependent metros such as Dallas, Houston, and Kansas City have less margin — meaning traffic around Arrowhead Stadium, NRG Stadium, and AT&T Stadium in Arlington will hit harder than in transit-rich markets. Arlington presents a particularly unique challenge: there is no direct public transit to the stadium, routing fans through CentrePort Station via a connecting bus — a journey of roughly 90 minutes from downtown Dallas or Fort Worth with a half-mile walk to the gates on arrival.
What’s Working — and What Fans Need to Know
Across all host cities, several best practices have emerged for fans navigating matchday travel:
- Philadelphia leads on affordability: SEPTA’s Broad Street Line drops fans directly at the Lincoln Financial Field complex for just $2.90, with free post-match rides home on matchdays.
- Pre-load transit cards: Fans are advised to avoid ticket machine lines by pre-loading digital transit cards or apps, such as TAP (LA), Breeze (Atlanta), or myORCA (Seattle/Sound Transit).
- Arrive early: FIFA security perimeters add 30–60 minutes to stadium entry, so fans are advised to plan to arrive 2–3 hours before kickoff for fan zone visits and security screening.
- Avoid rideshares post-match: Surge pricing on Uber and Lyft will be significant after matches; public transit or pre-booked shuttles are the cheaper and more reliable option.
- Uber kiosks for international visitors: Uber is installing payment kiosks at airports, hotels, and ports so international visitors can book rides without fumbling with an unfamiliar app.
Lessons for Future Mega-Events
Among all host venues, Gillette Stadium in the Boston area ranks highest in preparedness, with excellent congestion management and containment ratios, making it the most traffic-ready host city. Canadian cities like Vancouver and Toronto show lower preparedness scores, mainly due to congestion and safety concerns.
The World Cup 2026 traffic challenge ultimately offers a blueprint for future mega-events: integrated multi-agency coordination, federal investment in transit capacity, and early, clear communication with fans are the pillars that separate the success stories from the gridlock. City officials and transit planners view the World Cup not just as a temporary event, but as an opportunity to secure permanent infrastructure upgrades — a legacy that, if realized, would be the tournament’s most enduring goal.
